Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of webRoid (“the App”), developed and operated by Caffeinated Math, a subsidiary of HJJB, LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”).

By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

1. About the App

webRoid provides a local R computing environment on Android devices using webR, a WebAssembly distribution of R. The App allows you to:

  • Write and execute R code
  • Create and save R scripts
  • Generate statistical visualizations
  • Install R packages from the webR repository
  • Work entirely offline after initial setup

2. License

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for personal or professional purposes, subject to these Terms.

You may not:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App
  • Redistribute, sell, or sublicense the App
  • Use the App for any unlawful purpose
  • Remove or alter any proprietary notices

Open source components are exempt. The restrictions above apply only to the parts of the App we wrote. They do not apply to the third-party components described in section 4, which are licensed to you directly by their own authors, under their own terms.

In particular, nothing in these Terms limits any right you have under the GNU General Public License or any other open source license covering a component of the App, including the rights to copy it, modify it, redistribute it, and reverse engineer it. Where these Terms and such a license conflict, that license governs that component. See section 4 for how to obtain the corresponding source.

3. Your Content

You retain ownership of all R code, scripts, data, and files you create using the App. We do not claim any rights to your content.

Your content stays on your device. We operate no server for the App, and nothing you write or compute is transmitted to us. Two features send data elsewhere at your request: exporting a file as a GitHub gist sends that file to GitHub, and Send Feedback composes a message you then send to us yourself. Both are described in the Privacy Policy.

Files you create are written to the folder you chose when you set the App up. That folder belongs to you and sits outside the App’s own storage, so uninstalling the App does not delete it. Settings, history and other app data live in the App’s private storage and are deleted on uninstall; if you have Android backup enabled, part of that data is included in your device backup, as the Privacy Policy describes. You are responsible for backing up work you care about.

4. Third-Party Components

The App bundles and runs software written by others:

  • R 4.6.0, under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or version 3.
  • webR 0.6.0, the WebAssembly distribution of R. Its runtime binaries are under the GNU General Public License, version 3, and its build scripts under the MIT License.
  • The libraries webR compiles into that runtime, under their own licenses, some of them the GNU Lesser General Public License, and the fonts, data files and certificates it carries.
  • Various Android and Kotlin libraries, mostly under the Apache License 2.0.
  • Any R package you install, under whatever license that package carries.

Your use of each of these is governed by its own license. The App’s Settings > About & Legal > Licenses screen lists every component bundled with the App and its license, opens the full text of each license in the App, and holds our written offer for the source code.

Source for GPL- and LGPL-licensed components

The App bundles the webR 0.6.0 release unmodified. Its complete corresponding source, including the build scripts, the changes webR makes to R, and the version and download address of every library it compiles in, is published by the webR project at github.com/r-wasm/webr (tag v0.6.0). The source for R 4.6.0 is published by the R Foundation at cran.r-project.org.

If you would rather have it from us: for at least three years after we last distribute this version of the App, we will give anyone who asks a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code for the GPL- and LGPL-licensed components in it, on a medium customarily used for software interchange, for a charge no more than our cost of physically performing that distribution. Write to support@caffeinatedmath.com and say which version of the App you have; it is shown in Settings > About.

Network connections

The App connects to repo.r-wasm.org to list and install R packages, and to api.github.com when you export a gist. Both are operated independently of us. R code you write can contact any host you point it at; those connections are between your device and that host.

5. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND. WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that:

  • The App will meet your requirements
  • The App will be uninterrupted or error-free
  • Results from the App will be accurate or reliable
  • All R packages will be available or compatible

6. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP.

Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid for the App.

7. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Caffeinated Math, HJJB, LLC, and their officers, directors, and employees from any claims arising from your use of the App or violation of these Terms.

8. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms. Material changes will be communicated through the App or Play Store.

9. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your access to the App at any time, without notice, for conduct that violates these Terms or is harmful to other users or us.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.
